Following a period of significant national transformation, Bangladesh witnessed an unprecedented wave of public expression through street art. Walls across the country became canvases for citizens to share their hopes, concerns, and aspirations for the future. Recognizing the historical and cultural significance of this movement, Renaissance, a Bangladeshi publishing house, took the initiative to preserve these powerful messages in a way that would ensure they remained part of the national conversation.

The first step was photographing roughly 250,000 murals across the nation. These images captured the essence of the people’s sentiments, reflecting diverse perspectives on governance, social issues, and progress. To curate the most impactful messages, Renaissance shared these artworks on social media, inviting public participation to identify the statements that resonated most with the nation.

The result was ‘The Walls of Change,’ a carefully compiled book featuring 37 of the most significant artworks. This collection serves as a historical document, archiving the artistic expressions that emerged during this pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s history. Beyond preservation, the book has facilitated meaningful discussions at various levels of governance, ensuring that these public sentiments are acknowledged and addressed.

Today, this initiative has contributed to legislative changes, with 12 of the featured messages inspiring new policies and reforms. The book has been distributed among government officials, researchers, and policymakers, providing them with a tangible record of the people’s aspirations. By transforming street art into a formalized document, ‘The Walls of Change’ has demonstrated the lasting impact of public expression in shaping a nation’s future.
