Bonayan gets SDG Brand Champion Award 2023

Bonayan a renowned for its influential nationwide afforestation initiative, has received the prestigious SDG Brand Champion Award in the Climate & Environment category at the SDG Brand Champion Awards 2023. This recognition highlights the organization’s remarkable dedication to addressing climate and environmental challenges.

According to a press release, Bonayan’s afforestation program is not only impactful but also holds the distinction of being the largest private sector-driven afforestation program in the country.

The gala event, held on Friday (26 May) at the Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden, celebrated a total of 24 initiatives, with 11 winners and 13 honorable mentions. Golam Mainuddin, along with Jorge Luis Macedo, Ahmed Raihan Ahsanullah, and Sazzad Hossain, accepted the accolade on behalf of Bonayan.

Originating in 1980 in response to the Forest Department’s call for mass plantation, Bonayan has been instrumental in helping the government achieve its targets for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Currently, Bonayan is actively supporting the government in attaining the goals set by SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). These targets include increasing the forest area to 18% and expanding tree-covered land to 25% of Bangladesh’s total land area by 2030.

Each year, Bonayan distributes five million saplings of various fruit, forestry, and medicinal species. This initiative operates in 22 districts throughout Bangladesh and has already provided over 12 crore saplings, consisting of more than 25 different types of plant species, completely free of charge.

Through effective public-private partnerships, Bonayan has created numerous impact zones across the country, demonstrating its commitment to fostering a sustainable future. Notable projects include plantations at Shah Amanat International Airport, Kushtia By-Pass Road, Jamuna Bridge, and many others.

Bonayan’s remarkable efforts have garnered significant recognition both domestically and internationally. The organization has been honored with the prestigious Prime Minister’s National Award five times and the Chief Advisor’s Award once. Additionally, it has received international acclaim such as the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award for Green Leadership from Enterprise Asia and the Bangladesh Innovation Award 2021. Bonayan takes great pride in these achievements and remains dedicated to its mission of promoting environmental sustainability.
