Coca-Cola Foundation & WaterAid Bangladesh Partner for Water Security & WASH Services

The Coca-Cola Foundation and WaterAid Bangladesh have partnered on a collaborative project aimed at enhancing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services in climate-vulnerable areas. The project, titled “Promoting Water Replenishment and WASH Services,” commenced in February and will span 18 months, focusing on the Savar and Sunamganj regions.

The initiative involves the implementation of rainwater harvesting solutions to ensure sustainable water security at the Center for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP) campus. Additionally, effective techniques for recycling rainwater for non-potable purposes will be introduced. Refurbishment work will also be carried out in the flood-affected Sunamganj district, alongside the CRP activities in Savar.

To improve water, sanitation, and hygiene access for students and patients, the project will be implemented in two schools and five healthcare facilities. These efforts are expected to benefit more than 30,000 individuals within these institutions.

Saadia Madsbjerg, President of the Coca-Cola Foundation, expressed the foundation’s commitment to sustainable access to safe water and their pride in supporting WaterAid Bangladesh’s endeavors to enhance water access in critical areas.

The project’s primary objective is to enhance the resilience of climate-vulnerable communities in Sunamganj. In addition to rehabilitating damaged facilities, it aims to build the local community’s capacity in managing WASH resources, particularly during disasters. The project targets more than 60,000 individuals directly, including over 6% adolescents and young women.

Hasin Jahan, Country Director of WaterAid Bangladesh, highlighted the significance of water security in the face of climate change and its multiple threats to countries like Bangladesh. The project is expected to create positive change and promote water and sanitation security, while showcasing large-scale adaptation solutions for water security and WASH access in communities.

Previously, the two organizations collaborated on a WASH initiative in 2017, which aimed to develop inclusive and climate-resilient sanitation facilities for schools and community clinics. The project also included hygiene campaigns, knowledge enhancement on WASH adaptation for local actors, and the installation of context-specific water technologies. The earlier initiative successfully improved sanitation facilities for more than 53,000 community members, benefited 27 schools and 400 families with handwashing facilities, and raised awareness among over 7,000 women and girls.
