Kazi Shahid Ahmed, the visionary founder of Gemcon Group, has passed away on Monday (28 August) at 7:15 pm in a hospital in Dhaka. Kazi Anis Ahmed, his son and the publisher of Dhaka Tribune and Bangla Tribune, confirmed the news.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extended her condolences on his demise.
Kazi Shahid was a pioneering entrepreneur, writer, and publisher. He served as the editor and publisher of Ajker Kajog from 1992 until the newspaper’s closure in 2007.
He was also the driving force behind the establishment of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and the Kazi Shahid Foundation.
Born in 1940 in Jashore, Kazi Shahid Ahmed founded Gemcon Group in 1979. He ventured into the world of literature with his debut book published in 1995, followed by “Amar Lekha” and “Ghore Agun Legeche” in the same year. His contributions to various fields have left an indelible mark on Bangladesh’s cultural and entrepreneurial landscape.
