German brand Lidl expresses interest to increase business with Bangladesh

The BGMEA president called on Lidl to collaborate with BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology to develop skills of the students.

Stefan Erhart, the chief financial officer of Lidl and Kaufland Asia, conveyed admiration for the advancements made by the RMG industry and expressed Lidl’s desire to expand business with Bangladesh.

In a courtesy visit to BGMEA President Faruque Hassan on Wednesday, Erhart expressed interest in procuring a range of products, such as tents, ceramics, and bicycles from Bangladesh.

The meeting involved a discussion on the present business scenario in the RMG industry of Bangladesh, its potential, obstacles, and the industry’s efforts to tackle them, according to a press release.

Discussions also encompassed potential areas of collaboration, such as strengthening Lidl’s partnership with their suppliers and broadening the business scope in Bangladesh.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan emphasized the recent strides made by Bangladesh’s RMG industry, which cemented its position as a secure and sustainable source for apparel in the global market.

He also shed light on ongoing initiatives of the industry and future plans to elevate Bangladesh’s reputation as a high-value garment manufacturing center.

The BGMEA President urged Lidl to extend cooperation to their suppliers to improve their capacity to manufacture a broader range of products while adopting sustainable production practices.

He also highlighted the industry’s increasing focus on product diversification, technology upgrades, skill development, and productivity enhancement while placing immense emphasis on making the industry environmentally sustainable.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan called on Lidl to collaborate with the Center of Innovation Efficiency and OSH to enhance its capacity.

He also encouraged the German brand to collaborate with BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) to develop students’ skills in fashion design and related subjects.

Additionally, Bastian Grafe, senior director of Lidl Bangladesh, was present at the meeting.
