Honda and Nissan are reportedly in talks for a potential merger, as per a Nikkei report. The two automakers aim to boost their competitiveness against Tesla and Chinese EV manufacturers by forming a new holding company. Mitsubishi Motors might also join, with combined sales potentially making the group the world’s third-largest automaker.
While Honda’s President Mibe Toshihiro confirmed discussions on strategic partnerships, he stopped short of confirming a merger. Nissan echoed this, stating no agreement has been reached yet. Talks began in March, focusing on shared components and software.

The backdrop for these discussions is the rapid growth of Chinese EV makers like BYD, which has challenged Japanese automakers in China and Southeast Asia. Both Honda and Nissan have faced declining sales and production cuts, prompting the push for deeper collaborations to stay competitive.
