Lay’s Potato Chips to Begin Production in Bangladesh
PepsiCo’s beloved potato chip brand, Lay’s is set to commence production in Bangladesh, as part of the “Lay’s Make in Bangladesh” initiative, in collaboration with Transcom Consumer Products Ltd, according to a press release.
The initiative was launched by Ahmed ElSheikh, President of the PepsiCo India region, and Simeen Rahman, Group CEO of Transcom, at a manufacturing plant in Bogura.
PepsiCo stated that the establishment of a dedicated manufacturing unit for Lay’s potato chips is a testament to the brand’s commitment to supporting the local community and driving economic growth in the region.
The initiative builds on PepsiCo’s strong presence in Bangladesh over the past two decades and its successful partnership with the Transcom Group.
Taking advantage of Lay’s existing popularity in Bangladesh, this initiative aims to meet the growing demand for innovative formats and flavors in the thriving potato chips market, providing a delightful snacking experience for consumers.
Lay’s has set a target to procure 10,000 tonnes of high-quality chip-grade potatoes for its Bogura plant through a buy-back arrangement with over 1,200 local farmers, ensuring a reliable market and fostering a ripple effect throughout the entire go-to-market structure.
PepsiCo emphasized that upskilling the value chain to prioritize quality will be crucial for increasing potato volume production. The state-of-the-art facility will also generate direct and indirect employment opportunities, serving as a hub for job creation.
Pranav Mehta, Country Manager of Foods at PepsiCo, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, stating that Lay’s is a globally loved brand known for creating memorable moments of togetherness. Mehta added that the “Lay’s Make in Bangladesh” initiative will not only bring joy to millions of consumers but also instill pride in farmers and the workforce, who will witness their hard work transform into delicious, globally recognized snacks at an affordable price.
The initiative aligns with PepsiCo’s vision for a brighter future, where sustainable agricultural practices contribute to the growth and prosperity of Bangladesh.
Ahmed ElSheikh, President of PepsiCo India, highlighted the plant’s significance as a symbol of Lay’s commitment to local empowerment, community development, and long-term partnerships. He expressed confidence that the collaboration with Transcom would contribute to the region’s growth and prosperity, providing opportunities for farmers and local communities to flourish together.
