The Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), the apex organization of the country’s businesses, has got the new leadership under Mahbubul Alam, current president of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).
He has been elected president of this top organization for 2023-25.
He has become the president of the organization with the support of newly elected 78 directors of the FBCCI in a meeting in its head office at Motijheel in the capital on Wednesday.
He had already received the green signal from the top echelons of the government for the post of president.
The panel led by him was called the Bebosayee Oikko Parishad, where 55 directors were elected and nominated by consensus in favor of this panel.
However, in the election of 23 posts of the Association group, this influential panel was defeated as Sammilito Bebsayee Parishad surprisingly won 15 posts.
Apart from the post of president, the senior vice-president and six vice-presidents also won unopposed.
In the end, the core leadership was selected based on consensus.
In a surprise vote, no one got the post of vice-president of the Sammilito Bebsayee Parishad.
Amin Helali, the representative of Bangladesh Textbook Printing and Marketing Association got the post of senior vice president of FBCCI for the next term.
He is also the vice-president of the current Board of Directors of FBCCI.
Khairul Huda of Sunamganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mohammad Anwar Sadat Sarkar of Gazipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Jhashoda Jiban Debnath of Bangladesh Chamber of Industries became the vice presidents from the Chamber Group.
On the other hand, e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh representative Shomi Kaiser, Maze Association of Bangladesh representative Rashedul Hossain Chowdhury and Exporters Association of Bangladesh representative Md Munir Hossain became vice presidents on behalf of the Association Group.
Among the elected vice-presidents, only Shomi Kaiser and Rashedul Hossain Chowdhury won the post of director in last Monday’s vote, others got directorships on a nominated or negotiated basis.
FBCCI Election Board Chairman A Matin Chowdhury officially announced the names of the persons elected unopposed for the posts of president, senior vice president and six vice presidents.
Besides other members of the election board, the current president of FBCCI Md Jasim Uddin and former president Sheikh Fazle Fahim were also present during the announcement.
On July 31, FBCCI Board of Directors elections were held for 2023-25 for the posts for 23 directors.
A total of 1,745 votes, or 87.69% out of 1,990 votes were cast.
On that day, 23 director posts of the organization were voted as the rest of the positions did not require voting due to unopposed election or nomination.
Meanwhile, earlier on June 20, in an event organized at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital, a group of current and former presidents of FBCCI expressed their interest in seeing Mahbubul Alam as the next president of the organization.
