Messi pushes Argentina to clinch dream FIFA World Cup 2022
Argentina won their third World Cup trophy on Sunday, 4-2 in penalty kicks, as reported by AFP. In a close and thrilling match, both Argentina and France scored three goals apiece, with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe each scoring a hat-trick.
The game went into penalty kicks where Argentina’s Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning goal, much to the heartbreak of the defending champions.
France came back from being down 2-0 and 3-2 in extra time to make the score 3-3 and take the game to penalties. Messi had given Argentina the lead from the penalty spot in the first half, and Angel Di Maria made it 2-0 soon afterward.
However, Mbappe scored twice in the 80th and 81st minutes to level the playing field at 2-2.
Although it initially appeared that France would be the team to win the match, Messi scored a goal in extra time, putting Argentina in the lead. However, just two minutes before the end of extra time, there was a handball penalty conceded by Montiel. This led to Mbappe scoring from the spot, taking the game to penalties.
