Shwapno, the country’s largest retail chain, has introduced Bangladesh’s first self-checkout counters, marking a major step forward in modernizing the nation’s retail shopping experience. The service was inaugurated on August 20, 2025, at Shwapno Gulshan-1 and will be rolled out to other outlets nationwide.

The new system allows shoppers to independently scan, bag, and pay for their items using contactless cards or digital wallets, eliminating checkout queues. The technology was developed in-house by Shwapno’s technology team, with implementation support from Mastercard, Sunmi, and Eastern Bank PLC (EBL). Mastercard facilitated device integration through Sunmi, while EBL ensured secure payment solutions.

To celebrate the launch, Mastercard is offering eco-friendly shopping bags to customers who spend BDT 1,000 or more at the Gulshan-1 outlet using a Mastercard at the self-checkout kiosk.
