Shwapno has introduced jute bags as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic, a move praised by Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain, Advisor to the Ministry of Textiles and Jute.

This initiative aligns with the government’s recent decision to ban plastic bags in supermarkets. During a customer awareness event at Shwapno’s Gulshan-1 outlet on October 1st, Dr. Hossain described the launch as a pivotal step in reducing plastic waste.

He called the initiative a significant achievement by the interim government, urging widespread use of jute bags to promote sustainability across the country. Dr. Hossain also stressed the importance of collective commitment to making this transition successful.

Sabbir Hasan Nasir, Managing Director of Shwapno, reiterated the company’s dedication to sustainability. He emphasized Shwapno’s focus on building a better future for Bangladesh, particularly for urban middle-class families. As a participant in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), Shwapno integrates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its operations. Nasir noted that 10% of Shwapno’s workforce consists of individuals with special needs and highlighted its distinction as the only Global G.A.P.-certified retail chain in Southeast Asia.

He encouraged customers to bring their own eco-friendly bags when shopping and mentioned that affordable reusable bags are available in-store for those without one. This initiative is part of Shwapno’s broader effort to create a plastic-free Bangladesh and foster a sustainable future.

Among the key attendees were Md. Abdur Rauf, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Sohel Tanvir Khan, Shwapno’s Business Director, and Abu Naser, Operations Director.
