The decision to grant a license to Starlink, operated by SpaceX, in Bangladesh marks a potential shift in the country’s internet landscape. The move aims to enhance internet access, especially in remote areas, by leveraging satellite-based infrastructure.

Zunaid Ahmed Palak, the state minister for telecom and ICT, highlighted the intention to provide equal internet services to both urban and rural areas.

The arrival of Starlink promises competition in the telecommunications sector, potentially driving improved service quality and expanded access, particularly in regions where traditional telecom services struggle to reach. Despite this potential, the cost of Starlink’s services may limit its commercial success in Bangladesh, as they are considerably higher than existing internet options.

While SpaceX expressed interest in launching Starlink services in Bangladesh earlier this year, demonstrations showcased impressive internet speeds, but concerns existed, notably regarding lawful interception requirements. The government sought assurances from SpaceX to comply with local regulations.

Industry stakeholders have varied opinions on Starlink‘s entry. Some, like Md Emdadul Hoque of the ISPAB, question the necessity given the extensive coverage of existing internet services, while others like Shahed Alam of Robi Axiata see potential benefits, especially in areas lacking fibre-based internet access.

Amidst these discussions, the government’s decision to introduce new technology is seen as an initiative to embrace innovation. However, the actual impact and adoption of Starlink’s services will likely hinge on its affordability and the extent of its coverage compared to existing options.

The entry of Starlink into Bangladesh’s internet market coincides with the country’s prior investment in satellite technology, such as the Bangabandhu Satellite-1 and the intended launch of a second satellite for earth observation.

Overall, while the government’s initiative to introduce new technology is seen as positive, debates persist regarding the necessity, cost-effectiveness, and actual benefits of Starlink’s services, especially in a market already served by established internet providers.
