In a recent development in Bangladesh, Meghna Group of Industries (MGI), a prominent conglomerate, has Introduced an innovative approach to agriculture by utilizing discarded plastic bottles. This initiative is aligned with MGI’s corporate social responsibility commitment to promote environmental sustainability.

The process, known as Plastic Farming, involves the collection of disposed plastic bottles from the environment. These bottles are then repurposed to create floating beds for cultivating crops, using water hyacinth compost.

After nearly two years of research, the initiative was launched among landless farmers in the Tungipara, Gopalganj, and Pirojpur Districts. The Upazila Agricultural Office conducted training sessions for the farmers, imparting knowledge on the techniques of Plastic Farming. Additionally, various activities such as showcasing Plastic Farming video tutorials and establishing a dedicated website were undertaken.

Beyond its positive impact on reducing plastic pollution, the initiators are optimistic that Plastic Farming will enhance crop production and ensure food safety for landless farmers.

Bidyanondo, as a collaborative partner, played a crucial role in supporting and contributing to the success of this initiative.
